When Ted Turner launched CNN with the intention of running it as the first 24x7x365 news network, he boldly stated “Barring satellite problems, we won’t be signing off until the world ends,” Turner declared. “We’ll be on, and we will cover the end of the world, live, and that will be our last event. We’ll play the National Anthem only one time, on the first of June [the day CNN launched], and when the end of the world comes, we’ll play ‘Nearer My God To Thee’ before we sign off.”
This may sound like promotional hyperbole, but he wasn’t kidding – he set to producing the video to be played at the end of the world. This video, made 34 years ago, has stayed around through the many changes that CNN has gone through and still remains available in the internal computer system today. It’s accompanied by a note: HFR (hold for release) till end of the world confirmed.
