Last year, Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO, announced that the company would be adding battery swapping stations for its Tesla S model. Now, that program is about to be launched in Harris Ranch, CA.
In less time than it takes to fill a gas tank, a Tesla S driver can pull out his old battery and replace it with a fully charged one from the station. This change out includes removing and replacing the protective plating that surrounds the battery. The cost is less than what it takes to fill up a tank of gas as well.
There will only be the one station initially, and Tesla will evaluate demand and expand the program is there is sufficient interest. The other option for Tesla drivers is to use the SuperCharger network for free.
